Judith Alltree returned to the Shellback Club to shine a sharply focused light on a problem new to seafarers in 2020: the treatment of those manning ships during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the best of times seafarers are often neglected or exploited; when the shipping industry has a global pandemic to deal with, seafarers are placed at the bottom of the pile. At times literally held captive on their cruise ships and freighters, at other times accorded the slightest of considerations to disembark or return home, seafarers and their lives are generally invisible to most people. Who living through the inconveniences of toilet paper shortages in Toronto is aware that on their waterfront are mariners who have been held aboard their ships for months, stretching to beyond a year?
