83nd Year (2016-2017) Meeting Talks
2016 Meeting Dates:
October 19th: Rob Mazza continued his acclaimed series in the Model Room on yacht design. With George Cuthbertson, he discussed the 1990’s and beyond.
October 26th: Liz Benneian spoke about the Trumpeter Swan Coalition, a group that has been responsible for bringing Ontario’s trumpeter swans back from extinction. Today they are working to ensure a marina development project in Burlington does not threaten the winter grounds for 200 of these magnificent birds.
November 2nd: Mike Carter shared the story of his great grandfather who was shipwrecked on a desert island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on his way back from the Australian Goldrush in 1888. The ship’s company were rescued after 49 days.
November 9th: Ron Jenkins gave another update on the status and saga of the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.
November 16th: David Jarvis, world class racing sailor, presented on his many sailing and organizing experiences in such events as the Volvo Round the World Race, the 2015 Pan Am Trials and the Canada Cup.
November 23rd: Bill Bialkowski. of the Broken Wire incident, returned to speak of the building of the Panama Canal.
November 30th: Richard Birchell told a tirad of amusing boating tales, replacing Amanda Slade, Investigator for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, Master Mariner and Professor at Georgian College who was unavailable. Perhaps she will share how her sailing experience has helped her in the commercial world in which she now works at a later date.
December 7th: Judith Alltree has now been with the Mission to Seafarers for several years. She shared with us the changes that have occurred and the future of the Mission.
December 14th: Moosemilk – our annual Christmas/holiday gathering at Mimico Cruising Club

January 4th: Peter Rowe presented a video of his own making about sailing around Cape Horn.
January 11th: Richard Hudson shared his adventures on Issuma from the west coast of Canada to Patagonia. He has a YouTube channel called ‘Schooner Issuma’. Find it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lJY4zUoS6A%C2%A0 and watch his adventures as he uploads them.
January 18th: Janet Peters shared the often-humorous story of The Reluctant Sailor and what she learned during the voyage.
January 25th: Sally and Noel Lien and Dianne Leggatt regaled us with their adventures sailing around Ireland last summer.
February 1st: Krystyn Tully, of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, spoke about the Navigation Protection Act (formerly the Navigable Waters Protection Act), one of Canada’s oldest laws, and the five recommendations it made in November to the Government of Canada. Until 2009, the law remained substantially unchanged, when sweeping changes to the legislation eliminated protections for the majority of navigable waters in Canada and focused the law on specific acts of navigation on waters of interest to the federal government.
February 8th: Bob Benner and Connie Van Bussel titled their talk: "Sailing Backwards—Sort of the Canadian Way". They covered such episodes as disasters aboard, health care aboard, sex on a boat, and baksheesh among a few more.
February 15th: Moira and John Coulle returned to tell us more of their adventures aboard Geneveve.
February 22nd: Peter Aykroyd shared with us the history of the fascinating Aykroyd Dinghy and the fleets today.
March 1st: Christopher Hope: took eight days, twenty-two hours and three minutes to make the journey from St. Johns to Penzance, Cornwall, UK. He shared the adventure.
March 8th: The Disabled Sailors of Ontario shared the challenges and successes of folks who enjoy the sport of sailing.
March 15th: Richard Hudson returned to tell us, this time, of his journey through the Northwest Passage.
March 22nd: Carolyn O’Neil spoke about Great Lakes Awareness and recent policies with respect to the lakes.
March 29th: Two videos by Paul and Sheryl Shard - Normandy to Paris and A Trip to Morocco. . . . and a short Powerpoint presentation on the history of the Eddystone Light.
April 5th: Aubrey & Judith Millard, shared their adventures Living the Dream Part 1 – Toronto, to Antigua via the Mississippi, UK and Europe . . . And how long did that little journey take, I wonder?
April 12th: Stephen & Fran Hill spoke about their Down East Circle Route sailing adventures on their 37' Nordic Tug named Tug'n. They started in the Trent Severn Waterway, made their way east to PEI, and returned to their home base on Georgian Bay. They love to include historical detail of the places they visit.
