82nd Year (2015-2016) Meeting Talks
October 14:
Rob Mazza continues his acclaimed series in the Model Room on yacht design. With George Cuthbertson, he will discuss the 1970s and beyond.
October 21:
Ron Jenkins will return once again to give us an update on the status of the Toronto Island Airport expansion.
October 28:
Jim Winslow has a copy of Christopher Columbus’ log. He will share details of this historic document, offering enlightenment into the thinking of the explorer.
November 4:
Gordon Champion & Alan Redway will share the story of Blue Ribbon Boats. The challenge for the privilege of flying the Blue Ribbon and holding the Hales Trophy for the fastest crossing of the North Atlantic is awarded to passenger carrying Ocean Liners.
November 11:
Dr. Peter Nord, whose father served on one of the Majestic class ships, will speak of the HMCS Magnificent - the Majestic class light aircraft carrier that served the Royal Canadian Navy from 1946-1956. The third ship of the Majestic class, Magnificent was built by Harland and Wolff, laid down 29 Jul 1943 and launched 16 Nov 1944. Purchased from the Royal Navy (RN) to replace HMCS Warrior, she served in a variety of roles, operating both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. She was generally referred to as the Maggie.
November 18:
Elaine & Greg Neely have raced in the Chicago SuperMac and in the Transat (solo crossing of the North Atlantic). Their boat, Cerulian, is a Beneteau First 30, designed by the famed Volvo 70 designer, Juan K. The First 30 is the perfect synthesis of comfort and speed. The Neelys will share some of their adventures on this beautiful boat.

Victor Wejer returns, this time to share his experiences sailing the Northeast Passage.
December 2:
Judith and Ron Alltree visited the historic Republic of Malta earlier this year. You will enjoy their observations and adventures on this strategically located former naval base at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea.
December 9:
Richard Hudson has been sailing the coast of Brazil. We welcome him back to Toronto for a brief visit when he will tell us of his adventures down the magnificent edge of Brazil.

Moosemilk – our annual Christmas/holiday gathering at Mimico Cruising Club.
January 6:
Christopher Hope Catamaran cruising and scuba diving around Belize Barrier Reef, visiting ancient Mayan ruins.
January 13:
Eric Holden – tells of his adventures in races he has entered with the International Monohull Open Classes Association, most recently during the fall of 2015.
January 20:
Noel and Sally Lien – Sailing Nordcapp, Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands, and the Hebrides during the summer of 2015.

Elizabeth Muir – will speak about “THE DON RIVER & VALLEY, its history, demise, and recovery”.
February 3:
Peter Kuitenbrower, a senior writer at the National Post, will speak of his voyage aboard the MV Kaministiqua and tell us why Canada’s inland shipping is making a comeback – Rebirth of Highway H2O.
February 10:
Barbara McNutt – Miss Canada girls – Barbara will share her experiences during WWII as a young girl living in Dartmouth, N.S. across the field from Halifax Harbour and why an apron she wore 70 years ago is exhibited in the Canadian War Museum.
February 17:
Janice Howard – will speak of her adventures exploring the Antarctic with National Geographic.
February 24:
Bill Bialkowski, A/Lt.(N) (retired) Recreating the Broken Wire Incident aboard HMCS Bonaventure, February 1958 – In 1958, a Banshee jet fighter flown by Lt.(N) Joe Sosnkowski was landing aboard the ‘Bonnie’ when suddenly the arrestor wire broke. Against all odds, he managed to fly the aircraft out, land ashore and save his life. Bill recreates a simulation of the event.
March 2:
Rob Mazza – tells, in his inimitable and erudite style, of the Canal Boat Trip in England that he and his wife took with friends in 2015.
March 9:
Mike Nagy – works with the Elora Save Our Water organization (saveourwater.ca). He will tell us of the efforts of the group in relationship to bottled water and the current status of those efforts.
March 16:
Rory Fisher – will speak to us about the Siege of Malta, a military campaign in the Mediterranean Theatre, 1565.
March 23:
Richard Baker – of the Toronto Police Marine Services will tell us what they do, their goals for Summer 2016 and a bit about boating and drinking.
March 30:
Mark Mattson, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper (waterkeeper.ca)– has been able to unite his commitment to social justice with his passion for water by working to uphold the ideal that each and every person has a right to swimmable, drinkable, fishable water.
April 6:
Diane Reid – first woman skipper of the Clipper Round the World Race, will relate her achievements and challenges during this event.
April 13:
Rosemary Helmer (and a small panel from the Board of the LSSA) – will bring us up to date on the status of the Lake Sailing Skiff Association. The LSSA works with dinghy associations and their builders to ensure strength and availability of dinghy class boats.
