86th Year (2019-2020) Meeting Talks
Fall 2019 Meeting Dates:
October 16th: Richard D. Mitchele: An Inspirational Adventure of a Life. “D”, as he is called, was nominated as Sailor of the Year for his off-shore races, his boat deliveries and, after he was caught in a house fire, his amazing recovery and return to sailing.
October 23rd: Judith Alltree: The New and Rejuvenated Mission to Seafarers. Much has changed since Judith gave us her last update in 2016.
October 30th: Tanis Boger – Circumnavigation with her family aboard Wind Woman. Tanis will share a few of her family’s adventures on the leg from Australia to Mimico Cruising Club, Toronto.
November 6th: Richard Hudson: How to Achieve Your Sailing Dream. Richard brings all his many years of experience circumnavigating the globe to this presentation.
November 13th: Rob Mazza joins us once again, this time to review the Inductions into the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame. This session was scheduled last February, but we cancelled due to inclement weather.
November 20th: Bill Bialkowski returns to entertain us for the third time. His topic is: Celebrating Canadian Naval Aviators since 1914. This session was also cancelled last February.
November 27th: Ron Jenkins speaks on "The “Cyclone” that Changed Toronto". The Cyclone was a dredge used during the first half of the 20th Century to change the face (read waterfront) of Toronto.
December 4th: Paul Lamont: Travelling the Four Seas of Israel. Paul will share experiences on a recent trip to the Holy Land.
December 11th: Moosemilk at MCC. Join us for our annual Holiday Celebration – good food (including Moosemilk), good company, prizes, carol singing, fun!
Spring 2020 Meeting Dates
January 8th: Melodie Ridge will tell us of her time spent aboard as crew on the Southern Ocean Leg of the Clipper Around the World Race.
January 15th: Sue and Dave Williams will share the story that Sue wrote about in Ready to Come About, a compelling memoir of an improbable adventure on the high seas.
January 22nd: Kate Festeryga, Associate, Policy & Communications and Amina Mohamed, Associate, 307 Communications, Programming and Engagement, will join us from SIDEWALK LABS, to speak about the master-planned community that is currently being planned for twelve acres of the Toronto Waterfront.
January 29th: Richard Hudson joins us for the second time this year to speak about his experiences Sailing Newfoundland.
February 5th: Were you aware of the Metro Marine Modellers, the oldest model boat club in Ontario? David Allsebrook, Sail Captain of that club, will describe the many opportunities for folks to enjoy this hobby – designing, building, racing, and preserving all types and sizes of model ships, boats and craft.
February 12th: Paul Henderson has agreed to provide us with a video of ‘Maiden’, the tale of the first all-woman crew to sail the Whitbread Round the World Race; it thrills and educates.
February 19th: Ron and Pam Mazza will share their recent adventures in Vietnam and Hanoi.
February 26th: Boundless Sails from Baddeck, NS … to a Rescue at Sea. Neal Heatherington will share the harrowing tale of a rogue wave, a lost 38’ vessel, a mayday heard by Captain Wendell Hendricks of the Ardmore Sealifter who navigated the 700 foot oil tanker to the sailboat.
March 4th: Sally & Noel Lien recently sailed the English Channel to visit the South Coast of England and also took a side trip to Turkey. They will inimitably share their impressions and thoughts about their journeys.
March 11th: Angus Armstrong, Harbourmaster Emeritus of PortsToronto (Toronto Port Authority), will give us an update on the status of the plans for the waterfront of Toronto, including plans for the mouth of the Don River.
March 18th: Rob Mazza returns again this year. He has documented his Tour of the Canadian War Memorials at Vimy, Beaumont-Hamel, Dieppe and Juno Beach, the Five Canadian Pilgrims in Northern France.
March 25th: Gerri Staples takes us back to the mountains with her story of Trekking Machu Pichu.
April 1st: The Disabled Sailors of Ontario will be giving us an update on their activities and future plans.
April 8th: Chris Hope takes us to the Atlantic Leg of the Volvo 60 Around the World Race.
April 15th: Bill Hutton – Rescued at Sea - reflections, second thoughts and lessons learned. How a routine six-day passage turned into a midnight transfer to a 750 foot bulk carrier.
