85th Year (2018-2019) Meeting Talks
Fall 2018 Meeting Dates:
October 17th: Jim Leech is retired from 45 years in business and with the military. In his retirement, Jim has, among many other endeavours, remained very active in support of wounded soldiers. He described his March to the Pole, with twelve of those soldiers.
October 24th: Steve Killing returned to Shellbacks with his interesting and exciting talk: The Drama Continues – 2017 America’s Cup & Beyond.
October 31st: Paul Barry joined Shellbacks to share his amusing, informative talk: Chicane on Ice: Wintering Over on My CS 27.
November 7th: Nick Kozarevich, long-time Lake Ontario sailor, shared his harrowing adventure – A Sailor’s Nightmare – Rescue from a Frigid Lake – one early spring day just after launch.
November 14th: Diane Laws, member of Mimico Cruising Club, shared her trip to the Bahamas with husband, Jeffrey. Her humorous, sometimes romantic, presentation included wonderful pictures and a bit of the history experienced along the way.
November 21st: Peter Rowe returned to Shellbacks with one of his fine productions, Slocum, the story of the first solo round the world sailor.
November 28th: Jim Winslow, professor of Physiology and Neuroscience, spoke on Sailors and the Brain. Do their brains work differently than those of the average ‘bear’?
December 5th: Gerri Staples shared her third hiking adventure, Everest Base Camp Trek, which she did with her son in 2017.
December 12th: Moosemilk – our annual Christmas/holiday gathering at Mimico Cruising Club.
Spring 2019 Meeting Dates
January 9th: Ron Jenkins returned to give us an update on the status of Billy Bishop Airport on Toronto Island and other waterfront developments.
January 16th: Engineering Scientist, Marina Freire-Gormaly, shared her expertise in the design of an Automated Solar Powered Water Treatment System that is used in remote communities and can be used by sailors.
January 23rd: Marlaine Koehler of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust, joined Shellbacks again to give us an update on The Waterfront Trail. She joined us seven years ago when the trail was being extended to Lake Erie. Much has developed since then.
January 30th: John O’Dwyer, engineer, professor and Irishman extraordinaire, presented A Humorous Romp through Irish History (including St. Brendon’s Sailing to America).

February 20th: Bob Medland, long-time Shellback, returned to present the tale of Being ‘Holed’ en Route to Bermuda aboard Monterey. Bob was joined by Les Crane & Kit Tatum, who shared the adventure.

March 6th: Vicki Piersig gave Shellbacks a look at the bulk carriers that ply our waterways in her presentation Trading Places: Musings and Muses of an Iconic Marine Highway.
March 13th: Martha Henderson, in her first Shellback Club appearance this season, spoke on Exciting Olympic Experiences.
March 20th: Martha Henderson returned to speak to the Shellbacks about the Disabled Sailing Association of Ontario and their work in Ontario.
March 27th: Danielle Doggett of SailCargo, will updated Shellbacks on her ambitious project of building a sailboat in Costa Rica to carry cargo in the area and up the west coast of North America.
April 3rd: Captain Jim Pound shared his Adventures on the Nile.
April 10th: Aubrey & Judith Millard regaled Shellbacks with another part of their Living the Dream series, this time Part 2 Caribbean Cruising – Cuba to Grenada,
April 17th: Paul Henderson Pontificated, in his unique manner, about his many years in the sailing world, including observations about the Olympics (past and future).
June 12th: Shellbacks excursion to the Peterborough Canoe Museum.
