Melodie Ridge Schaffer joined the Shellback Club again to share her further adventures on "Two Legs of the Southern Ocean Clipper Race". Plans were disrupted by the advent of COVID-19, which waylaid the race, forcing it to be put on hold in the Philippines. Melodie will also give us a peek at plans she has for her next venture. About Melodie Ridge Schaffer
Melodie is the daughter of Howard Ridge, a longtime Shellbacks member. She has sailed and raced out of RCYC on variety of boats from dinghies (laser, 470, I14) to keel boats (shark, C+C's, 8 meter, J105). She currently owns a Dufour 34. She began offshore racing 3 years ago, and now has logged 23,000 nautical miles of offshore sailing. She is a Crew member for the Clipper Round the World Race, 2019-2020. She raced leg 3, the Southern Ocean leg which was a three-week race from Cape Town to Freemantle. She then raced for two months on leg 5 from Australia to the Philippines. The race was halted due to Covid. It will resume next year and she will race the "Mighty Pacific" leg. She is a biomedical engineer by profession, and more recently a sailing photographer. She has three children, one in high school and two in university.

Fred Rahm & Dahlijah took the Shellback Club on their Canal Boat Journey on a Longboat in the UK. They were joined by Mimico Members, Michelle & Craig Franklin. About Fred and Dahlijah Rahm
Fred and Dahlijah Rahm have been members at Mimico Cruising Club for 21 years and sail Rapscallion, a 1992 Catalina 34. They enjoy racing, both in the Club and AHMEN series of races, as well as cruising. They are also owned by four parrots, who sometimes join them for a sail. Fred is a Senior Business analyst for an American firm* and works from home. Dalia is a writer and also works from home. She has published one novel, a murder-mystery titled ‘The Blackstone Project’ and is currently hammering out the sequel; ‘A Tarnished Badge’. Rob Mazza returned to the Shellback Club to describe the visit of five Canadians to Canadian war sites in Northern France: Vimy Ridge, Beaumont-Hamel, Dieppe, and Juno Beach. Rob's presentation included personal observations and photos taken on the trip. About Rob Mazza
Rob Mazza is a Mechanical Engineer and Naval Architect with over forty years in the marine industry. He began as a yacht designer with C&C Yachts and Mark Ellis Design in Canada, and Hunter Marine in the US. He moved to sales and marketing of structural cores and bonding compounds with ATC Chemicals in Ontario, and Baltek, Inc. in New Jersey. Returning to Canada in 2011, Mazza is currently semi-retired, acting as Technical Editor for Good Old Boat magazine, and has written articles for Professional Boatbuilder, and Wooden Boat magazines. His articles often focus on the history and development of yacht design, especially in Canada. Mazza sits on the Board of Directors of the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, is a past Vice Commodore of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, and is currently chair of the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame Management Committee and the RHYC Heritage Committee. About Christopher Hope
In 1957 Christopher Hope learned to sail keel boats at the British Kiel Yacht Club in Germany while serving as a sapper* with the engineers in the British Army of the Rhine. He arrived in Canada in 1964 and has been a member of the RCYC for over 50 years. In the 1960’s Chris crewed on Sharks & larger boats. He has been involved with Tuesday & Thursday night race management. Chris is a competitive KONA, Hawaii wind surfer. Of a summer evening, you would see him surfing off the Toronto Windsurfing Club, where he is a member. With his late wife Mary, Chris chartered over nine times in 34 – 45’ mono hull sloops, mostly Beneteaus and Jeanneaus. These adventures took them to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Australia, and New Zealand. Their first bare boat sailing trip was to the British Virgin Islands in 1978. Chris was certified as a Scuba diver in 1992. He is a high-altitude mountain hiker, a white-water wilderness canoeist, a snow boarder and since October, 2016, a blue water sailor. |
