On the first day of summer, the Shellbacks travelled to Wasaga Beach and toured the Nancy Island Historical site. The Nancy, a two masted schooner built in 1789, was pressed into service for Britain in the War of 1812. Discovered hidden in the Nottawasaga River by American warships it was shelled and destroyed by fire. Its remains were left in the river, silting over and only rediscovered in 1927. The recovered remains form the basis of the Nancy Island Historical site.
After touring the site, the group headed to the Catch 22 restaurant, for an excellent lunch. Thanks to Dianne Leggatt for organizing a great expedition!
