PHOEBE WANG - Phoebe will take us into the world of Dutch Maritime Art from the 17th century to the present day with a bit of comparison to American Maritime Art.

CBC DOCUMENTARY: The GGR (Golden Globe Race). This is the world’s loneliest race: sailing solo around the globe. Imagine spending eight or nine months alone at sea: no GPS, no phone — just you, your boat and the endless ocean. Set against the backdrop of the world's most punishing seas, The Loneliest Race is an intimate documentary that delves into the emotional and physical trials of sixteen sailors in the Golden Globe Race. This non-stop, 50,000 km solo sailing race is the world’s longest and most mentally gruelling sporting event, pushing competitors to the limit with no fuel, no technology, and complete isolation. Only six sailors have ever successfully completed the GGR.

BRUCE KEMP will bring us up to date with comings and goings of the Brigantine Program in Hamilton. The Brigs Program is a registered charity offering by-youth-for-youth leadership programs that develop personal, social, and practical skills for youth 13-18 years old.

RON JENKINS joins us again, this time to share the story of the Ferries to the Toronto Islands: A History from the 19th to the 21st Century. Torontonians have ferried across Toronto Harbour to enjoy the Toronto Islands even when they could be visited on foot. Today hundreds of thousands make the same trip every year. The ferries used are also interwoven with the history of Toronto shipbuilding, a legacy of Toronto's early industrial waterfront.

GEORGE HUME brings us the story of the SS Great Eastern, an iron-hulled steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by John Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall Iron Works on the River Thames, London, England. Powered by both sidewheels and a screw propeller, she was by far the largest ship ever built (692’) at the time of her 1858 launch, and had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling. She later in her life, laid the first transatlantic cable.

WAYNE PARKER returns as a speaker to explain the PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) system. It is a racing handicap system used in North America. Wayne will tell us how it works and why we use it.

PHIL DAWSON – MOVING THE KEEWATIN FROM PORT MCNICOLL TO THE KINGSTON MARINE MUSEUM. Phil will follow the trip, with input from the folks at the Kingston Marine Museum.
DECEMBER 10th: MOOSEMILK, our annual holiday celebration and fundraiser (Naval Officers’ Association of Canada Scholarship Fund) will be held at Mimico Cruising Club. Yea!! Do join us for a few hours of fun, moosemilk (eggnog), good food, a carol or two, and a few nautical items in a raffle. BRUCE MACDONALD has written a new book: Sounds Like A Sailor. His will be a fun talk that delves into the words and phrases that we commonly use that were born at sea. There will be lots of true sea stories to illustrate the talk.
